Robert Aquilina’s Latest Stunt: Turning Down a Title He Was Never Really Offered

Robert Aquilina would like the nation to believe he performed a noble gesture this week: magnanimously rejecting Repubblika’s supposed request to reinstate him as its honorary president. But behind this theatrical announcement lies a political stunt so transparent it insults everyone’s intelligence.

Let’s rewind:

Two weeks ago, Aquilina resigned from Repubblika after being interrogated and arraigned in court on serious charges of domestic violence and illegal arrest of his wife. A police risk assessment even concluded her life was in danger. The charges were later dropped only after the court accepted his wife’s last-minute request – a decision many believe was the product of immense pressure, not freedom.

Now, just days later, Aquilina claims Repubblika’s executive committee unanimously decided to welcome him back as honorary president – only for him to heroically decline.

The truth is very different: insiders confirm there was significant internal pressure inside Repubblika to keep Aquilina out following these grave criminal accusations. Restoring him would have triggered a public backlash and further damaged an organisation that has already lost much of the credibility and influence it once claimed to hold.

So instead, Repubblika and Aquilina cooked up a convenient script: stage a phantom “offer” so that Aquilina could publicly reject it, trying to appear principled while avoiding further humiliation. It’s a fake drama meant to protect Repubblika’s shaky reputation and to help Aquilina launder his own.

Remarkably, this orchestrated charade happened the same day Aquilina announced he’s not only resuming his role as Malta’s representative for Fondazione Falcone –  but has even been promoted to its General Council.

This site has directly asked Fondazione Falcone whether it has quietly rewritten its mission statement: from championing the rule of law to turning a blind eye to alleged domestic violence among its own high-profile representatives. This reckless endorsement insults every victim of domestic abuse and shreds the public trust this foundation once deserved.

One thing is clear: Aquilina’s well-practised theatrics may fool a few loyal followers, but the Maltese public sees right through them. His stunts do not erase what happened behind closed doors — nor do they absolve the organisations that continue to protect him instead of protecting their own integrity.
