This time, he rushed to social media to brand Prime Minister Robert Abela as “morally bankrupt and unfit to lead” after Kurt Buhagiar was reinstated at the Lands Authority following his paid suspension linked to the tragic death of Jean Paul Sofia.

Strong words. But before we applaud Malta’s self-appointed guardian of purity, let’s remind ourselves who Arnold Cassola really is.

In July last year, a 15-year-old girl narrowly escaped serious injury when she fell into a manhole outside an apartment block on Swieqi Road, Swieqi. A flimsy piece of rotten wood had been covering the gaping hole for months – a death trap waiting to happen.

Where does Cassola come into this?

He owns an apartment in that very block.

Cassola claimed he took “immediate action” alongside another owner to fix the hazard. Immediate? How immediate is “immediate” when a lethal danger is left rotting in public for months until a teenager almost disappears into it?

Thanks only to sheer luck and her mother’s quick reflexes, the girl avoided grave injury, managing to hold herself half-submerged in a filthy, dangerous pit.

Here’s a question for Mr. Holier-Than-Thou:

Did you personally request Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà to investigate this avoidable hazard that endangered a young life?

Did you issue statements demanding accountability for the negligence under your own nose?

Or does your thirst for justice only activate when it’s convenient for your Facebook performances?

Arnold Cassola’s hypocrisy isn’t theoretical. It’s painfully real. He rushes to condemn everyone else, posing as Malta’s moral compass, but when accountability knocks on his own door, he goes silent.

How much longer will this tired persona of moral superiority shield him from answering for his own failures? Before preaching to the nation, Mr. Cassola, start by cleaning up your own backyard – or in your case, your own lethal manholes.
