Switzerland Exposes the Incompetence Behind Gabriella Vella’s Vitals Inquiry

Malta’s justice system has once again been humiliated on the international stage, and this time, the shame falls squarely on the magisterial inquiry into the Vitals hospitals scandal. Despite the inquiry now being concluded, its legacy is one of incompetence, political maneuvering, and international embarrassment.

In a decisive rebuke, Swiss authorities rejected outright the request for judicial assistance made by Malta’s prosecution, which was based on the findings of Inquiring Magistrate Gabriella Vella’s inquiry. Switzerland was unequivocal in its response, describing the request as a “fishing expedition” that lacked any legal substance.

This raises a critical question: how can Malta’s Magisterial Inquiry system be trusted to handle serious corruption cases if its inquiries are so shoddily prepared? If Inquiring Magistrate Gabriella Vella—who oversaw this inquiry—could not even identify facts, it calls into question her ability to oversee a complex investigation involving public funds.

It’s now painfully clear: the prosecution is stuck trying to make a case out of what Gabriella Vella put forward—a case that cannot stand on its own two feet. The lack of solid evidence, the incoherent request for international assistance, and the failure to meet basic legal standards show that this inquiry is nothing more than a poorly constructed political tool rather than a legitimate pursuit of justice. The prosecution, backed into a corner by Vella’s flawed investigation, now finds itself struggling to justify a case that is built on shaky foundations.

It is becoming increasingly clear that this inquiry was never about uncovering the truth. Instead, it was a political tool designed to keep a narrative alive, to create the illusion of action and investigation.

In fact, the inquiry—initially set up to investigate corruption allegations—has become little more than a farce, perpetuated by the amateurish and politically driven decisions of Inquiring Magistrate Vella. What started as an investigation into the management of Malta’s hospitals and the public funds involved has devolved into a chaotic spectacle. And for what? To vilify former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, former Health Minister Konrad Mizzi, and senior Government officials?

This inquiry was never about justice. It was always about creating a political narrative that could be wielded at will. The international rebuke from Switzerland has exposed the fundamental incompetence of the entire process. The inquiry’s failure to provide basic details and its inability to make a coherent legal request are proof of its hollow nature.

Malta’s judiciary, once a symbol of fairness, has now become a vehicle for political warfare, driven by reckless amateurism. Inquiring Magistrate Gabriella Vella’s handling of this case is a glaring example of how an important legal process can be weaponized for political gain, dragging the reputation of Malta’s justice system through the mud.

At this point, it’s clear that the inquiry has failed on all fronts. It is no longer an impartial investigation but a political spectacle with no real interest in uncovering the truth. The people of Malta deserve better. They deserve a justice system that operates with professionalism and integrity—not one that uses legal processes as a tool for political vendettas.
