Culture Minister Owen Bonnici has proven once again where his true priorities lie – and it’s certainly not with the common people. This week, he shamelessly defended blowing €5 million of taxpayers’ money on the Mediterrane Film Festival, an event designed more for elite selfies and glitzy PR than genuine cultural enrichment.
This is the second scandal in just weeks for Bonnici. Recently, details emerged of a €25,000 direct order handed to Mark Camilleri by the Arts Council under Bonnici’s ministry. Yes, €25,000 of public funds funnelled straight to a man known for his psychological terror, vile online attacks, and relentless humiliation of Labour members, activists, and families.
Who approved this shameful payment? Minister Owen Bonnici himself.
Let’s be clear: with €5 million, Malta could have:
- Purchased vital medicines for thousands of patients waiting in queues.
- Expanded mental health services for struggling youths.
- Invested in disability care facilities that remain underfunded.
- Increased pensions for the elderly living in poverty.
- Supported families battling the rising cost of living with targeted relief.
But none of this mattered to Owen Bonnici. He preferred to pour millions into a festival to keep the elite entertained.
It is clear: Bonnici is an elitist Minister with no feeling for real social issues. His concern is for his own image, his own clique, and his own public relations – not the people he is paid to serve.
Malta deserves a Culture Minister who sees culture as a tool for social empowerment and national pride, not just another flashy toy to feed his ego and his friends’ pockets.
Owen Bonnici has shown his true colours – millions for himself and his elite circles, crumbs for the people who actually need it.
