PN’s False Claims on Power Outages: A Desperate Attack Against Progress

Undermining National Achievements with Baseless Allegations

In its latest barrage of negativity, the Nationalist Party (PN) has stooped to new lows, falsely alleging that Malta’s electricity distribution grid is “unreliable” and insinuating that power outages have disrupted the shore-to-ship energy service provided at our ports.

Let’s be crystal clear: these claims are not only false — they are reckless.

The shore-to-ship service, introduced as part of the Government’s commitment to sustainable maritime infrastructure, has been running with unquestionable reliability since its launch. It is built on a simple, well-structured protocol: each vessel submits a Load Power Declaration at least 48 hours in advance of docking. This ensures that both Enemalta and Transport Malta can allocate the exact amount of power required — with no impact on the national grid and no room for surprises.

Since going live, the system has delivered over 3.7 million kilowatt hours of clean shore-side energy to vessels — without a single incident tied to power supply shortages or grid instability.

So what is the PN really doing here?

They’re not interested in facts. They’re not offering alternatives. They’re simply pushing a cheap, fearmongering narrative to discredit yet another forward-thinking project — a project they never conceived, never planned, and never executed in their quarter-century of mismanagement in government.

What’s worse, this kind of political sabotage hurts Malta’s reputation on the international stage and risks undermining green initiatives that improve air quality and public health in our harbours. These are the very projects that will shape Malta’s future, yet the PN would rather burn them down for a few headlines.

Minister Miriam Dalli emphasized the significance of Malta’s shore-to-ship power project, enabling ships to connect to electricity at port, reducing fuel consumption and air pollution.

Let’s not forget: when the PN had all the time, all the resources, and all the power, they delivered nothing of the sort. No shore-to-ship system. No electrification of quays. No serious climate strategy. Just talk.

Today, the Labour Government is delivering the infrastructure of tomorrow. And while the PN clings to tired lies and petty tactics, the country moves forward — cleaner, stronger, and more resilient than ever.

The PN are less credible on this sector. How many persons and businesses have been left without electricity for days repetitively throughout whole summers.

When the Marsa power station had problems, wasn’t 75% of Malta hit, and they had built a “state of the art” power plant (all in debt) in the picturesque fishing village, Marsaxlokk.
