Editorial: Where Growth Meets Grace — Andy Ellul and Labour’s Vision for a Just Malta

There are moments in politics when words become more than policy — they become principle. On Friday, such a moment occurred.

With the announcement of the Miscarriage Leave proposals, Hon. Andy Ellul, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, made it clear: Malta’s economic growth is not an end in itself — it is a means to uplift and support our people, especially in their most vulnerable moments.

In an increasingly complex world, it is easy for governments to chase statistics, boast about GDP, or hide behind data. But true leadership is measured not just by how well we do in times of prosperity — but how deeply we care in times of pain. And this government, led by Prime Minister Robert Abela and driven by dedicated reformers like Andy Ellul, is showing the nation that compassion is policy, not charity.

A Vision Rooted in Justice, Not Just Numbers

The proposals are revolutionary for Malta:

  • Seven days of paid leave for women who miscarry

  • An equal seven days for their partners

  • Compensation more than double the minimum wage

  • Government-funded psychological support for the couple

This is not a token gesture. This is a bold, humane framework — a social net that recognises that healing is not just physical, but emotional. That grief is shared. That the trauma of miscarriage is real, and the State has a duty to acknowledge it.

It is also a message to every woman, every couple, and every employer: dignity is not negotiable. And labour rights must evolve to reflect the emotional truths of modern life.

Andy Ellul: A Champion for Quiet Justice

Hon. Andy Ellul has emerged as a voice of social conscience within government — and not with loud slogans, but with quiet, meaningful reform. He represents a generation of leaders who understand that progress is not just about building roads, but about building respect, support, and equality into the system.

And he does so with clarity, humility, and effectiveness.

This is the politics of care. And it is the kind of leadership Malta needs as we navigate the future — grounded in growth, but driven by values.

Labour Governs

A Government That Stands By You

In announcing these proposals, Hon. Andy Ellul and the Labour Government are proving once again that economic success and social responsibility go hand in hand.

As Malta’s economy continues to thrive, we will not leave anyone behind — not in times of joy, and certainly not in moments of sorrow.

This is the Malta Labour is building:

One where prosperity uplifts.

One where grief is not punished with silence.

One where every citizen is seen — and supported.

Let others criticise. Let others shout. This government will do what it has always done: deliver where it matters most — in people’s lives.

What the article fails to mention that we are already paying for this paid leave.

Do you know that the Abela government reduced our sick leave days?
