The Dynasty Falls: Caruana Galizia Clique Implodes as PN Civil War Begins

The post-Bernard Grech era is already tearing the Nationalist Party elite apart — and the first casualties are the Caruana Galizia family

The collapse has begun.

The once-dominant Caruana Galizia family — long seen as the architects of a self-righteous political cult — is now in freefall. And the moment that triggered their downfall? The resignation of Bernard Grech as Nationalist Party leader.

It’s no coincidence.

Bernard Grech, the puppet who kept the Bidnija elite in power, finally walked away last month. And with him, the last thread of institutional protection for the Caruana Galizia legacy snapped. Without Grech, the PN’s top brass are no longer playing nice. The knives are out — and the war inside the Nationalist Party has erupted in full view.

Bidnija’s Collapse Begins with Grech’s Exit

For years, Bernard Grech allowed the Caruana Galizia family to operate unchecked within the PN. His leadership was built on appeasement — playing both sides, placating Roberta Metsola while kneeling before Daphne’s legacy. That balancing act kept the party paralysed, silenced dissent, and held back any hope of renewal.

But now that he’s gone, so is the illusion of unity.

Delia’s resurgence, Metsola’s betrayal of the Bidnija narrative, and the public implosion of Matthew Caruana Galizia — all of it is the result of power shifting away from the clique that once dictated who could speak, who could lead, and who had to be destroyed.

Metsola vs. Matthew: The Elite Turn on Each Other

The latest feud between Roberta Metsola and Matthew Caruana Galizia is more than a personal spat. It is the beginning of the great unravelling. A civil war among the very people who once marched in lockstep behind a self-appointed moral crusade.

Metsola — now Malta’s most powerful political figure in Europe — no longer needs the Caruana Galizia narrative. She’s shedding it like old skin, embracing Adrian Delia, and moving toward a broader, less toxic brand of power politics. Her actions speak volumes: Daphne’s legacy is not sacred anymore.

And Matthew? He can scream all he wants. But no one in Brussels is listening. Not even in Pietà.

The Party Fractures Further

Inside the PN, chaos reigns. Adrian Delia is rebuilding his base. Alex Borg is plotting his move. Metsola is staking her own quiet claim over the next phase of the party’s future. And all the while, the Caruana Galizia faithful — from Paul to Matthew to their dwindling activist echo chamber — are being pushed further into irrelevance.

Even Manwel Delia, their once-loyal attack dog, is now sniffing around new alliances. His silence over Matthew’s outburst is no accident — it’s self-preservation.

This is the civil war no one wanted to admit was coming. And now it’s here.

The Era of Fear is Over

For too long, the Caruana Galizia family controlled the Nationalist Party through fear and manipulation. Journalists, MPs, activists — all danced to their tune or risked public humiliation.

But the era of fear is over. Roberta Metsola’s cold break with the past, and Bernard Grech’s departure, have shattered the illusion of unity. The dynasty has fallen, and the PN is finally free to fight for its soul — even if that means civil war.

Let the elite tear each other apart. The rest of Malta is watching. And the Bidnija myth will not survive the storm.

    About time!

Didn’t you realize that the crisis for Daphne grew when that stupid politician Simon had given the reins to Daphne in the PN’s propaganda department?

One has to be stupid to take such a decision when at least 2 post mortem PN’s electoral reports point fingers directly on Daphne for the loss of votes?

Did the Caruana Galizia clan think that most PN circles and supporters venerate them?

The PN should take care that the PN belongs to everyone and not to a closed circle, something where the PL, unfortunately under Bobby is heading in this Cul-de-sac.
