The Fake Crusaders of “Ġustizzja għal Artna”: Hijacking Budget Day to Push a Political Agenda

When NGOs turn into political puppets and the Nationalist Party hides behind banners of “activism” to attack progress

While Finance Minister Clyde Caruana prepares to deliver what will be remembered as the best budget ever — one that continues to strengthen families, protect workers, and empower communities — a group of self-proclaimed “activists” are plotting to steal the spotlight.

Yes, the so-called “Ġustizzja għal Artna” campaign — which has now revealed itself to be nothing more than an Opposition front — will hold its second protest on Budget Day, Monday 27 October. A protest deliberately timed to overshadow the government’s achievements and disrupt national unity on a day that belongs to the Maltese people, not to the PN’s sore losers.

The Hidden Hands Behind the Banner

Let’s not be naïve.

These NGOs, who pretend to represent “civil society”, are nothing more than political instruments in the hands of a weakened and desperate Nationalist Party. They hide behind environmental slogans while their real aim is clear — to undermine the Labour Government’s success and create chaos just when stability and growth are at their peak.

They are backed by the same old faces — the same elites who lost power years ago and have never forgiven the people for choosing progress over privilege. Their “protests” are not about trees, buildings, or planning. They are about trying to sabotage Malta’s stability.

The Real Threat to Democracy

These groups claim that the government’s planning reforms are a “massive threat to democracy.”

Let’s be blunt — they are the threat.

It is not democracy when unelected activists try to dictate national policy from the streets.

It is not democracy when NGOs funded by hidden donors attempt to override Parliament’s will.

It is not democracy when political losers in Opposition use fake environmental campaigns as Trojan horses to regain relevance.

Prime Minister Robert Abela made it crystal clear: the bills and legal notices will not be withdrawn. The reforms will go ahead — because they are right, necessary, and fair.

Building for the Future, Not Blocking It

The Labour Government’s planning amendments are not about helping developers — they are about restoring trust, rebuilding fairness, and modernising our communities for the next generation.

The Nationalist Party can keep shouting, and their puppets can keep marching — but Maltese families care about lower taxes, better wages, and stronger services, not about elitist tantrums in Valletta.

On Budget Day, the country will celebrate another milestone in its journey of growth and prosperity.

Those who wish to spoil it will only expose themselves as the enemies of progress.

This coordinated attack — a protest disguised as activism — is nothing but an attempt to hijack national unity for partisan gain.

Let them march.

Let them scream.

While they play politics in the streets, Labour will continue governing with clarity, courage, and purpose — delivering results for the people, not excuses for the privileged.

It was the Prime Minister who initiated all this. A public consultation should have been held from the outset regarding the proposed amendments, rather than imposing them unilaterally. The reactions were both predictable and justified. The original proposals were controversial and provoked widespread criticism. When public outrage intensified, the Government was forced into yet another U-turn—this time announcing a public consultation. The backlash was not spontaneous; it was a direct consequence of how the process was mishandled. The Government must now face the repercussions of its own actions.
